Overview: This course is designed for newly promoted supervisors and officers preparing for leadership roles, focusing on the practical realities of leading in today’s policing environment. It addresses the transition from peer to supervisor, the challenges of enforcing standards, and the importance of consistency, communication, and accountability. The course emphasizes real- world application, equipping supervisors with tools they can immediately implement within their teams. Key Topics: ● Leading former peers while maintaining credibility ● Establishing and enforcing expectations without unnecessary conflict ● Managing performance and addressing deficiencies ● Conducting difficult conversations effectively ● Identifying and addressing issues before escalation Instructor: Sergeant Mark T. Williams is a Patrol Sergeant with the Whitemarsh Township Police Department and brings more than twenty years of law enforcement experience. He has held assignments including Crisis Negotiator, Montgomery County Drug Task Force member, De- escalation Instructor, TASER Instructor, and Field Training Officer. In addition to his operational role, he serves as an adjunct professor at Chestnut Hill College and as an instructor at the Temple University Police Academy. He is a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command and is a Doctoral Candidate in Public Administration at West Chester University. His work focuses on developing practical, evidence-based leadership training for supervisors.
